SOCIAL SECURITY BLUES
Towards the end of every year
Hoping for an increase in your SS check so mere
One that might bring some holiday cheer
You begin watching for the COLA to appear
Hooray! Next year an extra $40 you will score
Then the landlord raises your rent $50 more
So, you get a job stocking shelves at the grocery store
Or welcoming shoppers to Walmart and mopping up their floor
Because at the ripe old age of seventy-eight
Chances of better opportunities aren’t too great
But the rent gobbles up 75% of all you get
And already accumulating is your credit card debt
Yet you cannot qualify for government welfare
Because your monthly income, they declare
Including the $200 taken out for Part B Medicare
By forty bucks exceeds the max that they can bear
